DR. B. BANERJEE is heading Bicco's R & D unit. His basic research interest is in natural products and their applications. Endowed with both national and international experience, Dr. Banerjee is assosiated with different national and international research bodies. Dr. Banerjee is recipient of many awards in recongnition of his research, authored 150 research papers and five books. Dr. Banerjee is building up and heading a group of scientists.

R & D ACTIVITIES

Bicco's R & D activities involve sourcing plant species that could provide alkaloids with pesticidal properties and growth promoting substances. To this objective, our endeavour invloves systematic screening of plant materials, noticing their insect attracting attributes or defenses against insects, mites and pathogens along with their growth patterns.

In the next phase of our research, the micro-sites for specific plant parts storing insecticidal compounds and growth promoting chemicals are indentified using biochemical indicies. These sensitive plant microsites are next evaluated for their functional efficiences such as in promoting growth of plant species other than their own, and more importantly, for their insecticidal, miticidal and fungicidal properties. In the final phase the more important of these compounds are elucidated, identified and bio-assayed for their bio-effectiveness in specific agroecological  situations.

Once the compounds of importance are identified, they are isolated and integrated to produce formulated compunds for field evaluation. This part of work involves interactions with national laboratories and agricultural universities in India and abroad. A compound is given final shape only after extensive in-house and out-house trials.

Our laboratories are equipped with most modern equipment, including Infrared Spectraphotometers, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers etc. The laboratories are being updated further with more sophisticated equipment including the addition HPLC and related equipment.

The second part of R & D activity involves quality control of all inputs we produce, including the bio-pesticides, during different stages of their processing, and in the pre-packaging stage, not only for the quality, but optimum shelf-life as well.
