Termites are major pests of both mature and young crop
plants, and intensities of their attacks are on increase virtually in all
agricultural
areas. Termite species that attack crops
include Odontotermes assamensis, O. parvidens, O. redemanni and a species of Microcerotermes. Some of them attack dead and dying branches; but die backs resulting from heavy and uncontrolled
damage during cultivation
attract both dry-wood and underground based live-wood eating termites. Those species of termites attacking living tissues are the most serious pests that can cause heavy loss of
plants
that have taken years to grow. Even young plants
of all varieties are not free from their attacks.
CROP LOSS
Termites also feed on dead and diseased wood, and having gained their foothold they extend their galleries into living tissues eventually causing death to the
plants. Termite damage causes a minimum 15% loss of crop annually and to this if the cost of replacing the damaged
plants
are added, the total monetary loss would be huge.
HOW TO CONTROL ?
Given the huge losses of crops which are renewable biological resources, it is essential that termites
often are controlled and contained before they become too widespread. However, to be technically and economically effective, control measures are ideally taken up at a time when termites are most active which normally is the dry period.
Plant
sanitation is an integral part of the long term strategies for control of live-wood and other termites.
WHY TR-MITk ?
Synthetic insecticdes for termite control are currently precluded because of the enviromental problems they create, and their destrucive potentials in killing benefical insects needed for the management of
damaging pests of crop. Moreover, by their very nature they create new pest problems as well.
TR-MITk is the only termiticide today that does not pose such problems. It is
based on active ingredients derived from plants having very strong anti-termite propensities. TR-MITk is the only plant based termiticide developed indigenously by our R & D unit. It is not only eco-friendly but provides long term control over termites by acting on the core populations of termites
often located deep in soil.
HOW TO APPLY TERMIT
TR-MITk acts directly against termites and thereby stops the activities of live wood, scavenging and other foraging of termites of consequence in agriculture. TR-MITk is unique in being formulated with only biotoxins that are highly effective against all species of termites in their active phases. TR-MITk is an emulsion that should be applied, mixed with necessary volume of water, in and around the termite infested sites. An application at rate of 10-20 kg per hectare of infested areas should effectively keep termites of all species well under control for the season. The amount of water should be sufficient to allow the free percolation of biotoxins in TR-MITk into the soil where viable termite nests are located. Slight stirring of the soil is highly conductive to percolation of the biotoxins.
TR-MITk should also be applied to the plant body
particularly against live wood termites that are active on the
frame. A stock solution of one part of the TR-MITk in 500 parts of water by volume should be applied directly to the frame using high-volume sprayers. Clearing the
plants
of dead and damaged branches, dying branches and branches earlier damaged by termites, prior to applications of biocidal solution would greatly enhance the overall efficacy of TR-MITk as a powerful biological termiticide is totally ecofriendly and does not create any residue problem. It acts against termites very quickly by its trans-population action.
